What is psychodynamic counselling and how can it help?
As a psychodynamic counsellor I work with the belief that our early childhood relationships and experiences get carried through with us into the present. They shape and colour the way we relate, they colour expectations, our beliefs, and the way we deal with adversity. Those ways of relating and being that once helped you survive can become maladaptive, they can stop working in your favor. These old patterns of being and relating may start to hinder your life; they can stop growth, they sabotage you, prevent you from getting close with others, or cause you to cling to others, you may blame yourself and beat yourself up. There are many ways in which the past can affect your present and your future possibilities.
My job whilst being closely tuned in and empathic is to walk along side you on your own journey towards finding your true-self, your birth right, your full potential. Together we can begin to piece together and make sense of your life by bringing those unconscious ways of being into conscious awareness. In so doing, you will gain not only a deep understanding of why you think, feel and behave the way you do, but furthermore, you’ll see your true-self and worth, you’ll have a freedom to make better choices, have more fulfilling relationships, an ability to have self-compassion and love, and inturn you will feel more creative, and content with your life.
In counselling, it is important to gain insight in order to heal, but what is equally important, if not more important is the chance to develop a new experience of being in a relationship. I whole-heartedly believe in the unique relationship between client and counsellor. To feel heard, seen, understood, to feel held in mind, and accepted unconditionally is what creates shifts in your thinking that stays with you long after the counselling is over.
Psychodynamic counselling heals from the inside out, there is no sticking plaster. I am interested in you, your internal world, your life that has been, and your life now. There is no right or wrong way to do counselling, I want to hear what is on your mind or what simply comes to mind, there is meaning in everything that you bring.
